AI-wise: A learning module for responsible use of AI in academic writing

CLI Fellowship of Bjorn de Koning

The Community for Learning & Innovation (CLI) gives lecturers from Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) the opportunity to apply for a fellowship. With this fellowship, they research educational innovation, or carry out an educational project. On this page, you can read more about the CLI Fellowship of Bjorn de Koning (ESSB), in which he developed a learning module called “AI-wise” for academic writing.

The goal of this project is to contribute to the responsible use of generative AI (GenAI) in education, which is a new skill that must be explicitly taught to students so it can be included in their academic skill set. The CLI Fellowship focuses specifically on the development and evaluation of the “AI-wise” learning module for academic writing and its implementation within the Psychology programme. AI-wise teaches students how to formulate prompts, critically evaluate AI-generated text and accurately incorporate AI-generated information into their own writing assignment.

After completion of the CLI Fellowship, and in collaboration with Marike Polak, the use of the AI-wise learning module will be scaled up to multiple programmes within Erasmus University. During the implementation, the effectiveness of the AI-wise module, the experiences of students and lecturers, and student behaviour are studied using both qualitative and quantitative methods.

We would be happy to collaborate with you if you would like to use the AI-wise learning module. In that case, please get in touch via b.b.dekoning@essb.eur.nl.

In this interview (in Dutch), Marike Polak and Bjorn de Koning discuss their CLI Fellowship projects.
