University of applied sciences or university?

Thinking about university? It’s not the only option. For some, a more applied or professionally focused programme might be a better match. Here’s a quick look at the key differences to help you choose what fits you best. We have listed the most important differences for you below.

Students at both a university of applied sciences (HBO) and a research university (WO) receive a bachelor’s degree. Despite their differences, students obtain the same type of diploma, which is internationally accredited.

Education at a research university is not better or more difficult than education at a university of applied sciences. You choose the type of education that suits you best based on who you are, what you want, what you can do and what you know.

Are you not sure what suits you best? Go back to Step 1 and fill in the questionnaire.
