The digital world in which we live offers more and more opportunities for information sharing, connecting with others, and entertainment. But this world also brings threats such as fake news, radicalisation, and cybercrime. It is therefore more important than ever for everyone to be able to deal with this, in other words to be media literate. This autumn, dr. Sanne Opree and prof. dr. Jeroen Jansz will conduct a literature study on media literacy in the Netherlands, commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and in collaboration with the Media Literacy Network.
What is the current state of affairs? The aim of this study is to provide an overview of scientific and policy-driven research into media literacy among the Dutch population, to summarise the main conclusions and to give a view of the options for monitoring media literacy among the Dutch population.
To answer this, dr. Opree and prof. dr. Jansz will map out all existing research into media literacy. These studies will subsequently be analysed on the basis of a coding system that is in line with the new competence model for media literacy that will be published in the autumn of 2020.
The final research report will be published mid-December 2020. This report will be used by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to improve the approach to media literacy from 2020 onwards.
