The study programme in a nutshell

  • The pre-master in History is an intensive one-year programme that prepares you for our Master’s specialisation in Applied History or Global History and International Relations.
  • During the pre-Master, you will choose your intended specialisation and receive specific preparation for admission to that master’s programme.
  • The programme comprises four core elements: historical content, theory, academic skills and research skills.
  • Upon successful completion of the pre-master programme, students gain direct access to their chosen Master’s specialisation, including an offer of admission.
  • The programme provides a strong academic foundation for further study in history, with a clear focus on preparing students for research and analysis at master’s level.

What you will learn

In this pre-master’s programme, you will acquire essential foundational knowledge in the field of history. You will be introduced to key historical perspectives, methods and debates that will help you better understand how the past is studied and interpreted. At the same time, you will develop practical research skills specific to the discipline of history. You will learn how to conduct historical research using primary sources from the past, how to analyse these sources critically, and how to place them within their broader historical context. Furthermore, learning to present research findings in a clear, well-structured and academically sound text is an important part of the programme.
