The pre-master History is an intensive programme that prepares you for one of our master specialisations: Global History and International Relations or Applied History.
Those who complete the programme will not receive a diploma but a certificate of admission to the master specialisation Global History and International Relations or Applied History. Scroll down to view the study schedule of the two pre-master programme of the different specialisations.
Duration of the programme
The pre-master takes one year. During this year you must obtain 45 course credits (EC), rather than the 60 credits in our regular master programmes. This gives you the time to adjust to the pace of studying at Erasmus while getting ready for the following master specialisation.
You will have a combination of lectures and actively participate in tutorials. And, of course, you are always welcome to attend your lecturer's weekly consultation hours. You will also need to reserve 33 hours each week for reading and analysing texts, writing papers and preparing presentations.
During one of the two programmes you will take two courses in each eight-week block. Each course consists of a weekly lecture and a three-hour tutorial group session. In term 3, you will take a research seminar, in addition to your courses, where you will learn how to conduct a small-scale historical research project yourself.
Developing analytical skills
In the pre-master, you will be educated as an academic professional. All of the pre-masters focus on writing essays and articles and on conducting social scientific research. At the end of the pre-master year, you can put your newly gained research skills and knowledge to good use when you write your final paper, a Bachelor’s thesis.
Teaching language
All the pre-master specialisations are taught entirely in English.
