Care for Well-being: Development of the Well-being of Older People measure

Accurately measuring and advancing the well-being of all older people should be high on the scientific and societal priority list. As the ageing of the population is forcing governments to make choices about the use of scarce resources in healthcare, economic evaluations are increasingly used as a systematic and transparent framework to compare the costs and benefits of alternative health and social care services.

In cost-utility analysis, benefits are typically expressed in terms of quality-adjusted life-years gained, comprising both length and health-related quality of life. However, as benefits of health and social care services for older people are not (confined to) health improvements, this thesis adds to measuring the benefits of interventions for older people in a more comprehensive, valid and reliable manner.

Next to testing the validity of existing measures for the well-being of older people, this thesis presents the development and initial testing of a new alternative, the Well-being of Older People measure (WOOP). The WOOP aims to capture a comprehensive set of well-being domains relevant to older people, accommodating the diversity in views on what they consider important to their well-being. This may ultimately contribute to funding those services for older people that from a societal perspective provide the most value for money.
