This half-day (free) Symposium will explore the core principles of Implementation Science and how it is evolving as a scientific discipline. With growing interest in how evidence-based practices are translated into real-world settings, this event will bring together international researchers to reflect on the development and use of Implementation Science in health research across diverse contexts.

Implementation Science is the study of methods and strategies to promote the uptake of evidence-based interventions into routine practice, systems, and policy.
This field adapts knowledge and methods from public health, organisational behaviour, behavioural science, and systems thinking to improve how innovations are adopted, adapted, and scaled across diverse real-world settings.
Implementation Science makes sure that what we discover in research becomes routine, high-quality care. It transforms innovation into impact.
This event will feature a plenary presentation (Prof. dr. Elvin Geng, MD), providing an overview of developments in Implementation Science. In addition, this event features three thematic focuses: ecosystem building for Implementation Science, use of Implementation Science in global health, and academic publishing in Implementation Science and Implementation Science Communications.
Speakers will share reflections on developing and applying Implementation Science across local, national, and global contexts, emphasising the potential use and value of this field in real-world settings. The event will feature expert round-table discussions to debate the scientific and disciplinary identity of Implementation Science, with space for audience engagement.
This symposium is for researchers and practice partners engaged in implementation science, health services research, public health, and social sciences, particularly those interested in improving real-world implementation or application of research.
Objectives
- To reflect on how Implementation Science serves the field of health research and practice (e.g., global health, health management, care quality improvement)
- To debate Implementation Science as a scientific discipline: what makes it a science?
- To explore its disciplinary pathway: multi-/inter-/transdisciplinary?
- To engage in dynamic discussions around the boundaries and future of the field
Speakers
This event will also host several guest speakers:
- Prof. dr. Elvin Geng, MD (USA): Director, Center for Dissemination & Implementation at Washington University in St. Louis; (Co-)Editor-In-Chief of Implementation Science Communications
- Dr. Reshmie Ramautarsing, MD (NL): Implementation Science Director at the Institute of HIV Research and Innovation (IHRI) in Bangkok, Thailand
- Dr. Khic-Houy Prang (AUS): Senior researcher, Evaluation and Implementation Science unit, Centre for Health Policy, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health
- Dr. Jumana Hashim (Singapore): Research Fellow, Centre for Behavioural and Implementation Science Interventions (BISI), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore
Registration
Registration for this Symposium is free but registration is required. Registration will remain open until we reach full capacity. We we encourage you to register early to secure your spot.
Organisers
This Symposium is organised and hosted by the Health Services Management & Organisation (HSMO) department of Erasmus School of Health Policy and Management (ESHPM).
Sessions will be (co-)facilitated by Prof. dr. Robbert Huijsman (Professor of Innovation & Implementation in Dementia Care), Dr. Martina Buljac-Samardzic (Associate professor), and Eden Zhu (PhD candidate).
