Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:
Obesity is not simply a matter of “eating less and moving more”, but a chronic, complex condition that requires tailored care. This dissertation explores how a person-centred approach can improve care and support for people living with obesity. The research examined what patients value most in their care, their experiences with weight stigma in healthcare, and how person-centred care relates to patient outcomes. Patients emphasized the importance of being treated with dignity and respect and of being seen as more than their weight. Their needs varied widely: some sought more emotional support, others clear information or the involvement of loved ones. A measurement tool was developed to assess person-centred obesity care, available in a long (40-item) and short (24-item) version, both reliable and practical for use in research and care settings. Many people living with obesity encounter weight stigma in healthcare, ranging from unsolicited advice and hurtful comments to inadequate facilities. This stigma is a major barrier to quality care. Findings showed that more person-centred care was associated with better physical and social well-being, as well as greater satisfaction with care. In conclusion, high-quality obesity care requires an empathetic, integrated, and non-stigmatising approach tailored to individual needs. Simplistic advice such as “eat less, move more” fails to capture the condition’s complexity. Greater attention should be paid to under-addressed aspects of care, such as emotional support. Conversations about weight should begin with consent and use clear, respectful language, supported by professional training and suitable care environments.
