Preference laundering, broadly construed, is concerned with restricting, modifying, or affecting the set of preferences to be used as basis for judgements about individual or social interest. As such, the notion has played an important role in both philosophy (as a conceptual analysis of well-being) and welfare economics (as a process aimed at improving the quality of the input used for welfare judgements). Surprisingly, given the relevance of preferences in health state valuation and reimbursement decisions in healthcare, the notion of preference laundering is infrequently discussed in the associated health economic literature. Nonetheless, several empirical and conceptual contributions have been made that may be considered to reflect preference laundering.
The workshop will start by defining preference laundering and discuss how existing studies in health economics could be conceived as reflecting such laundering. Next, we will have two authors presenting example approaches, as well as the conceptual and methodological challenges that are part of those approaches. In an open discussion, opportunities and challenges of using preference laundering in health economics will be discussed.
