Two lecturers may call themselves 'Medical Delta lecturers' as of Tuesday 14 November. They were inaugurated simultaneously alongside nine new Medical Delta professors during the Medical Delta Conference at the Laurenskerk in Rotterdam. At this gathering, the collaboration of universities and colleges presented plans for a new multi-year program that directly addresses current challenges in healthcare. One of the two appointed lecturers is Anneloes van Staa, affiliated with ESHPM.
The appointment of Medical Delta professors and lecturers underscores the collaboration of the affiliated universities and colleges within Medical Delta in the fields of innovation and health. Medical Delta is a partnership between TU Delft, Erasmus MC, Erasmus University, LUMC, and Leiden University, along with four universities of applied sciences in the province of Zuid-Holland (Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Leiden University of Applied Sciences, and Inholland University of Applied Sciences), governments, healthcare organizations, and businesses. Its goal is to realize technological solutions for sustainable healthcare.
Medical Delta professors and lecturers as ambassadors for collaboration
The newly appointed Medical Delta professors and lecturers have a proven track record as connectors between scientific disciplines and between science and practice through their research and work. With their appointment, they not only receive recognition for this, but they will also function as ambassadors for further collaboration in the field of health and technology.
Medical Delta appoints professors to 'Medical Delta professor' annually. With their title, they also receive two or more appointments at the nine affiliated academic institutions and universities and become members of the Scientific Council of the collaboration.
New programming aligns with urgent 'wicked problems' in healthcare
Staff shortages, increasing healthcare demand, and malfunctioning healthcare systems: the predicted 'healthcare infarct' is now palpable in many areas. Many challenges in healthcare have the characteristics of 'wicked problems': complex issues with not one cause, but multiple interconnected causes.
"Therefore, there is not just one solution for this problem," says Prof. Dr. Frank Willem Jansen, chairman of Medical Delta. "For example, innovations might seem well thought out but do not always align with practical needs. We will have to search even more emphatically for broad collaborations to innovate appropriately, and successfully implement them to help solve the most urgent issues in healthcare."
Medical Delta presented its new vision, mission, and strategy, emphasizing 'transdisciplinary collaboration.' Not only between scientific disciplines or between science and healthcare organizations, governments, and businesses but also in collaboration with healthcare professionals and patients.
Medical Delta's new programming will start from mid-2024 and focuses on so-called 'societies.' These societies initially form around the themes of 'Care,' 'Prevention,' 'Transformation,' and 'Sustainability.' The first consortium meetings will take place from January onward.
