Feedback dialogue

In this activity, students learn how to actively use general, overarching feedback from a teacher for their own learning process. Instead of receiving feedback passively, students select what is relevant to them and translate it into concrete action points.

By exchanging ideas with fellow students, they discover different interpretations of the same feedback and refine their own improvement strategies.

Step-by-step plan

Stap 0: Preparation

Students receive feedback on a completed assignment on the spot, either from the teacher or from a fellow student.

Step 1: Teacher explanation

The teacher explains the feedback to the whole class, using different presentation methods. In addition to a verbal explanation, key points are visually supported, for example with slides or annotated examples of student work. Where possible, an explicit link is made to the rubric, so it is clear which assessment criteria the feedback relates to.

Step 2: Individual feedback

Students receive their feedback (from the teacher or a fellow student) and are given a few minutes to write down their emotional reactions.

Step 3: Exchange emotions

Have students share their emotions in pairs, allowing them to vent and compare their reactions with a fellow student.

Step 4: Analyse the feedback

The teacher explains that students will now analyse their feedback using the feedback matrix (see materials & tools).

Step 5: Exchange analyses

Students exchange their analyses and help each other with the analysis.

Step 6: Make actions concrete

Based on their feedback matrix, they formulate concrete actions (to learn from, to improve their assignment, etc.).
