How to make your classroom (more) inclusive

Introduction

In this MicroLab, you will work on creating an inclusive learning environment in which students feel at home and recognised. An inclusive learning environment is one that allows room for controversy and challenges students to learn from each other. 

This MicroLab consists of two parts. In the first part, we will discuss what an inclusive learning environment can look like, and you will reflect directly on your own learning environment. What kind of students do you have? What knowledge do they bring with them? At what moments can I make my students feel at home? In the second part of the session, you will practise with a case study you have brought in yourself, with the help of a training actor. 

During this MicroLab, you will be challenged to reflect on your role as a teacher in a (super) diverse learning environment and develop skills to create an inclusive learning environment in which students feel challenged, seen and involved.  
 

Who is this for?

Content, form and time investment

In this Microlab, you will explore the various factors that influence an inclusive learning environment. You will examine what your student group needs based on a target group analysis and discuss useful strategies with other teachers. Based on this analysis, you will then study the structure of your course and look for opportunities to create a greater sense of belonging.   

Another important part of the session is the role play, which takes place in the second part of the training. You bring in a specific problem that you are (or have been) dealing with. With the help of an experienced trainer-actor, you will practise with this specific case.  

Finally, the training has a blended structure, which means that there is mandatory preparation on Canvas before the physical training takes place. The total time investment is approximately 4-5 hours (including preparation time).   
 

Edubadge

If you made the preparation and participated in the session, you can earn an Edubadge. This is a digital, visual certificate which you can share on e.g. LinkedIn. Interested parties can immediately click on the certificate to find out what you have done to achieve the Edubadge.
