Who is this for?

The MicroLab is intended for lecturers, PhD students, or supervisors who want to improve their coaching skills in supervising students during their writing process. No specific prior knowledge is required.

What will you achieve?

  • You are able to use supervision skills to support students in their learning process.
  • You reflect consciously on your own role(s) and goal(s) as a supervisor, in order to make deliberate choices in your approach to supervision.
  • You empower students and provide structure by applying the GROW model in your conversations.
  • You can identify students’ needs by listening (actively) at deeper levels.
  • You ask effective questions to stimulate students’ reflection.

Content, form and time investment

You can expect a lively workshop in which we will actively explore and discover together. To make the best possible use of our time in the MicroLab, this session has a blended format. This means that you complete preparatory assignments in a Canvas environment, which will give you the prior knowledge you need for the MicroLab session. It is essential that you have completed the preparation in order to take part in the session. The preparation consists of reading, a self-assessment of your own coaching skills, and watching interactive videos.

During the MicroLab session, we will discuss your input and use a range of tools to work with the models and content. To ensure that you can put the theory into practice and discuss any questions or cases of your own, we offer you the opportunity to schedule a coaching session with one of the trainers after the MicroLab. We are happy to think along with you so that you feel confident in your role as supervisor. The total time investment is approximately 5 hours (including preparation time, a 3-hour MicroLab session, and a 1-hour coaching session).

This MicroLab is consistently rated very highly by lecturers, which we are very proud of! We hope to see you in this MicroLab soon!

Earn an Edubadge

If you made the preparation and participated in the session, you can earn an Edubadge. This is a digital, visual certificate which you can share on e.g. LinkedIn. Interested parties can immediately click on the certificate to find out what you have done to achieve the Edubadge.

If you really listen to someone, which you can do on multiple levels, they will be more likely to share with you.

Esmee Bally is a postdoctoral researcher in Public Health at Erasmus MC. She attended the MicroLab 'How to supervise students' in September 2024.

Esmee: "I started this job in February 2024 and noticed that there was actually very little written down about what exactly it entails and what tasks you have. I knew about research, but teaching and supervising students were new to me. So, I looked for ways to improve my skills in these areas.

I talked with my supervisor, who gave me some good advice. But their experience with this stage of the career was from a long time ago. Also, I am the only postdoc in my team, so I cannot relate to anyone in that respect either. In my search for practical help with teaching and supervision, I found EUR and the MicroLabs from CLI/Risbo.

One important thing I learned from the MicroLab was the importance of good listening. If you really listen to someone, which you can do on multiple levels, they will be more likely to share with you. Also, you never know exactly what a student is going through. So, it's good to start with open questions and then ask more detailed ones.

I just happened to have finished supervising a student, but I definitely use these insights in the projects I work on, like guiding more junior colleagues."

Would you recommend other teachers to follow this MicroLab and why?

"Yes, I highly recommend it! The MicroLab ‘How to Supervise Students’ is interactive. During the session, you learn about the different roles you can take as a supervisor and when to use them. It's very useful."
