Step-by-step plan
Step 1: Introduction
Explain to students that interventions and decisions in complex systems often have ripple effects beyond their immediate outcomes. In this activity, students will explore a real-world policy or innovation and identify both intended and unintended consequences. Present a relevant example from your field or one that students are familiar with to ground the activity in a concrete context.
Step 2: Mapping consequences in groups
Divide students into small groups and ask them to map the intended outcomes and possible unintended consequences of the selected intervention or policy. Optionally provide a template or graphic organizer to support their analysis, including categories such as short-term effects, long-term effects, feedback loops, and blind spots.
You can let students plenary share their insights and guide the discussion toward ethical considerations, such as: who benefits from the intervention, who might be negatively affected, and how underlying values shape decisions.
Step 3: Individual reflection
Ask students to write a short individual reflection on how they can apply complexity thinking within their own field of study.
General reflection questions:
- Can you share an example of when you gained a deeper awareness of the complexity of a situation?
- How do you approach understanding complex situations or issues?
