We invite you to join us on Tuesday, 14 November 2023 from 14:00 till 16:00 for ESHCC’s Sustainability Dialogues. Sustainability is a timely and pressing issue addressed in EUR's Strategy 2024. A transformation toward a sustainable society can only be achieved through collective actions at the local level. Therefore, you’re invited to join the dialogues on our school’s role in a time of climate and ecological crisis. Having valuable input from you – faculty members, professional service staff, and students – we will be able to develop new policies and action plans for sustainability at EUR and ESHCC.

Most of us believe that Erasmus University and ESHCC should help solve the complex problems of modern society. The climate and ecological emergency is one such problem that we need to address. However, we may feel our research and teaching is unrelated, or that we lack the requisite structural support to engage beyond the realm of personal lifestyle choices. To remove these barriers, we must rethink how our university works. We must adjust some of our policies and practices - across research, education, and operations – to be better able to contribute to solving societal challenges. |
The core team consists of nine colleagues from various schools, the Design Impact Transition (DIT) platform and the Erasmus Sustainability Hub. We initially developed the dialogue concept and presented it to the university Board in spring/summer 2023. The Board procedurally committed to our plans and provided funding from strategic resources.
Each school has one faculty organizer, one thought leader and one or more communications colleagues dedicated to the dialogues.
The faculty organisers are responsible for: organizing the dialogues in their respective schools and monitoring, evaluating and sharing the outcomes with leadership. They have been actively working on advancing sustainability in their respective schools in the past.
The thought leaders are responsible for giving strategic input on the school dialogues and the follow-up process in their respective schools. They are knowledgable about sustainable transformations within their respective disciplines.
The communications colleagues are responsible for communicating the dialogues in their respective schools and supporting the faculty organisers and thought leaders in organising the dialogues.

Tuesday, 14 November 2023, 14.00 – 16.00 at the Q-building Woudestein. We hope that you will join us for a network drink afterwards.
Erasmus University Rotterdam strives for an accessible campus and buildings for all students, employees and visitors. The session language is English.
The dialogue will take place in three parts, Faculty pitches, Roundtable discussions, the wrap-up and network drinks.
- Faculty pitches
We will open the session with a round of small pitches on Research, Education and Operations.
- Roundtable discussions
During the roundtable discussions, we will look at sustainability on a personal-, school-, and university level. The discussions will be moderated by Malou van Hintum.
- Wrap up & closing
We will collect the action points from each table and close the discussion with a word from ESHCC Dean Prof.dr. Martine van Selm.
- Network drinks
We hope that you will join us for some drinks to meet up and share experiences from the dialogues.
During these dialogues, we will craft policy and action proposals within the realms of research, education, and operations. These proposals are customized to suit the unique needs of the different schools within our university, as well as the central administrative level. Afterwards, the thought leaders and faculty organisers will share the proposals with the School Boards and the University Board and discuss what is needed to make progress (i.e., setting up a workgroup, providing resources...). The Boards have committed to respond. In case of lack of follow-up to commitments or rejection of the outcomes of the dialogues, the University Council and Faculty Councils can organise an open hearing with the University Board and the Faculty Boards in which they need to provide reasons.
Note: We have encouraged the schools to publish the policy and action proposals after the dialogues for digital feedback. This will give you an opportunity to provide input after the dialogue has ended.
Insights gleaned from the dialogues will also feed into EUR's new Strategy 2024-2028 (see the current strategy). Our overarching goal is to transform the vision of a truly sustainable EUR community and university campus into a tangible reality.
After the debate, we will synthesise its outcomes into new policies and action plans for sustainability in education, research, and operations at Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. They will also serve as input for EUR’s sustainability strategy 2.0. The CvB and Deans have committed to implementing these plans.
