DUO finance

Important details
Loan description












 		Some students can apply for the student finance. You may be entitled to this financial aid from Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) if you meet one or more of the  requirements below:
  • You are under the age of 30; 
  • You are registered for a full-time or dual programme at EUR;
  • You are registered for a programme that lasts at least 1 year; 
  • You are registered for a programme that is officially recognized in the Netherlands; 
  • You have the Dutch nationality, or a residence permit type II, III, IV or V;
  • You have a residence permit type I, or EU/EEA or Swiss nationality are subject to additional requirements. (Find out more at duo.nl/particulier/student-finance);
  • You have lived in the Netherlands for five consecutive years;
    • If you haven't lived in the Netherlands for five years, you do work in the Netherlands on the basis of an official contract of employment, and when you work at least 56 hours a month;
  • You receive income from a part time job where you work at least 56 hours a month.
Do you fail to meet the nationality requirements for student finance? You may still qualify for a limited funding towards the payment of your tuition or course fee.

Deadline

 
  • Apply the latest on the first day of the month in which you turn 30;
  • Your student finance also has to start at the latest on the first day of the month in which you turn 30. 
Loan amount
 

To be determined by DUO.
Finance consists of: a loan, a student travel product and a supplementary grant (depending on parental income).  

Repayment

 
  • You always have to pay back the loan (with interest);
  • The student travel product and supplementary grant are converted into a gift if you graduate within 10 years. Otherwise you will have to repay them as well.

Application DUO finance

Follow these steps to apply:

  1. Visit the DUO website to inquire about your eligibility;
  2. If you meet the requirement, make sure to request a DigiD* wit SMS verification;
  3. Apply for a personal OV-chipkaart**;
  4. Log in to 'My DUO' to apply for student finance. You can only log in with your DigiD. If you cannot use DigiD, apply for student finance using the form "Aanvraag studiefinanciering hoger onderwijs voor opleidingen in Nederland". 

*With a DigiD you can access online services offered by the Dutch government. You will receive an activation code within 5 days of your request.

** When you are entitled to student finance, you are allowed to use public transport for free. The student travel product can only be loaded on a personal OV-chipkaart.

Deadline: first day of each month.
