People’s understanding of what good looks like in health and care is continuously developing. This makes regulating quality and safety of these sectors a challenging profession. Until now, there was limited opportunity to gain academic knowledge about this field of work. Erasmus University now fills that gap by offering a professional educational program specifically aimed at regulating health and care quality.
This course will teach you how regulation can positively impact health and care quality and, importantly, user experience. You will broaden your understanding of the different forms of intelligence regulators can use, and how to make sense of this data. Using scientific evidence and practical experiences, you will expand your skills in designing regulatory strategies that can improve health and care quality. In an ‘all teach, all learn’ setting with international colleagues, you will gain new competencies with which to address the challenges faced by your regulatory organisation.

The course is developed by Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management at the Erasmus University Rotterdam in collaboration with the English Care Quality Commission, the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision and the Dutch Health and Youth Care Inspectorate.
What will you learn?
By the end of this course, you will:
understand the societal role of regulation and its mechanisms of effect.
have greater insight into current challenges faced by health and care regulators.
be able to better understand and explain these challenges using experiences and scientific theories relevant to health and care regulation.
be able to design innovative strategies and policies to counter current challenges and positively impact health and care quality and user experience.
have built an international network of peers for continued shared learning.
How will the course be taught?
- The eight-month course, taught in English, will use a mix of face-to-face and online sessions.
- There will be 1 three-day and 2 two-day face-to-face sessions held in the Netherlands. Each face-to-face session will include a social programme to provide participants with the opportunity to network with (international) colleagues.
- In between each face-to-face session there will be at least one online meeting, with the possibility of extra coaching as needed.
- Learning will take place in different formats including plenary lectures, smaller group discussions and individual assignments aimed at developing strategies for current challenges.

Who should attend?
- People working in organisations that regulate, inspect and/or oversee the quality and safety of providers of health and/or care (this includes acute care, mental care, disability care, long-term adult care, youth care & child protective services).
- The course is best suited to senior inspectors and people with a strategic or policy role or those wishing to move into these roles.
- Each course will have a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 30 participants.

Workload & Certificate
The workload between course dates will depend on the time you spend on your assignments. Upon completion you will receive a certificate from Erasmus University, detailing the content of the course.
Fee
The 2023-2024 course costs EUR 2,200 per participant. This includes lunch, dinner and social programme. The price excludes travel and hotel expenses. It is possible to pay in two instalments of EUR 1.100,- each, one in 2023 and one in 2024.
