The BEHnet Winter School covers state-of-the-art applications of behavioural and experimental economics to health. Participants will learn to apply experimental methods to key issues in health economics. As such, they will explore how individuals behave in various health-related contexts and how economic experiments, combined with insights from behavioral economics, can be used to rigorously test and evaluate interventions aimed at changing behaviours.

More specifically, the Winter School will be organised around different themes, including: incentives in health care markets; behaviourally inspired interventions; risk, time, and social preferences in health; and equity in health. Special attention will be given to building software packages, both to design experiments and to analyze experimental data. The course is relevant for PhD candidates and advanced master students who draw on experimental methods, theoretical modeling, and quantitative methods in their research.

Lecturers

  • Jeannette Brosig-Koch (University of Magdeburg)
  • Olivier L’Haridon (University of Rennes 1)
  • Leontine Goldzahl (IESEG School of Management)
  • Arthur Attema (ESHPM),
  • Matthew Robson (Erasmus School of Economics)
  • Daniel Wiesen (ESHPM & University of Cologne)

Structure

Interactive lectures, group work supervised by the organisers (improving software skills and writing a research design), and student presentations.

Aims

Students will explore state-of-the-art applications of behavioural and experimental economics methods and insights in the context of health. Drawing on lectures and the reading list, students—working in groups-will develop original research ideas, design experiments, and present their proposed designs.

Prerequisites

While the course primarily addresses PhD students, a limited number of spaces will be made available to advanced master students. Some background in game theory, experimental economics, and econometrics will be useful.

Locations

  • Bayle Building, room J7-55 (8 and 10 Dec)
  • Mandeville Building, room T18-25b (9 Dec)

Materials and grading (optional)

Lecture slides and a reading list will be made available online. Students’ performance is assessed based on presentation in class and a written study design.
