In early October, the 11th ICHOM Congress took place in Barcelona, the largest Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC) event globally. For the conference, Maud van den Berg (PhD student, HSMO) had her abstract submission selected as one of the top 5 abstracts.
Maud delivered a plenary presentation, moderated by Dr. Thomas Lee, Chief Medical Officer of Press Ganey Associates and editor of NEJM Catalyst, and Dr. Neo Tapela, Chief Scientific Officer of ICHOM. As a highlight, Maud received the ICHOM - NEJM Catalyst Implementation Award.
Her presentation focused on a two-year research project she conducted within the integrated maternity care organization Annature in Breda, in collaboration with Erasmus MC and healthcare insurer CZ. The research encompassed various principles of Value-Based Healthcare, including the reorganization of care pathways to provide the right care in the right place for the pregnant population in Breda. With the overall aim to improve outcomes that matter to patients and reduce healthcare costs. Additionally, an outcome-based payment model was designed. This experiment in paying for quality rather than quantity for care is internationally recognized as a significant step in healthcare reimbursement.
Maud demonstrated that the implementation of interventions resulted in increased patient value, and the jury was impressed by the comprehensive research. They are even considering publishing the research in the NEJM Catalyst journal. This international platform beautifully showcased the work of ESHPM.
