The Erasmus Centre for Energy Transition (ECET) is an interdisciplinary research and education centre of Erasmus University Rotterdam, established in collaboration with sixteen industry partners to accelerate the energy transition. Recognising that this transition is not solely a technological challenge, ECET unites research, education, and practice to tackle challenges at the intersection of knowledge and action.
Drawing on the university’s broad academic strengths, our centre unites expertise in systems thinking, regulatory innovation, economic modelling & financing, leadership, stakeholder management, sustainable strategy & innovation management, data analytics, and AI to shape the future of sustainable energy.

The energy transition is a complex societal challenge
The transition to sustainable energy affects not only technology and infrastructure, but also economics, governance, social behaviour and equity. Decarbonisation requires new business and finance models, collaboration between public and private actors, and societal shifts in values and behaviours. ECET addresses these challenges by focusing on 3 core objectives:
We equip EUR students and future energy leaders with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to navigate the energy transition and its link to climate and ecological change.
We support and enhance transdisciplinary Energy Transition research aimed at acceleration.
We bridge academia, business, government & society to build (international) partnerships & learning communities to co-innovate and accelerate.
ECET envisions Erasmus University and its surrounding region as an Energy Transition Valley. Our goal is to build a dynamic ecosystem, positioning South Holland and the Netherlands at the forefront of the global energy transition.
