Brief summary of the doctoral thesis:
This thesis focuses on treatment decision-making for esophageal cancer in the situation where patients can decide between experimental active surveillance and standard surgery. Chapter 1, ‘general introduction and outline of the thesis’, explains the possible clinical dilemma both patients and clinicians are faced with in this treatment decision. That is: which treatment is best for the individual patient? The aim of this thesis was to contribute to an optimization of the decision-making process, from both the patient- and clinician perspective. The first part of this thesis focuses on patients’ experiences and needs regarding decision-making on active surveillance. The second part focuses on the guiding role of the clinician in this process.
