Our research

Our research – conducted with and for healthcare regulators – drives innovation in regulatory practice, shaping new regulatory models (e.g., reflexive regulation), emerging themes (e.g., regulating networks), and the impact of regulation on healthcare. Additionally, we contribute to theory development and the academic debate on regulation, advancing scholarly understanding and practical applications in the field.

We often use a qualitative action-research approach, combining methods such as interviews and observations to collaborate with stakeholders to improve practice in real-time. Our layered approach focuses on different levels of the healthcare sector, as we engage with and examine the interactions between regulators, organizations, and professionals. This methodology enhances research value and ensures direct, tangible impact.

Our work spans the full spectrum of health and care settings, from specialized acute to long-term and social care, with a focus on three key areas:

  1. Regulation and regulatory practices – Advancing understanding of regulatory theories and approaches and their impact.
  2. Embedded research within regulatory organizations – Conducting and supervising research in these institutions, providing unique data access and fostering reflexive and learning organizations.
  3. Healthcare quality and safety – Investigating these topics and translating findings into regulatory insights and approaches.
