The Expert Group on Health & Care Regulation actively shares insights at national and international conferences, connecting with healthcare regulators and quality improvement professionals worldwide. In 2025, we engaged in a series of events designed to inspire collaboration, drive innovation, and advance safer, higher-quality care.
BMJ/IHI International Forum in Utrecht
At the BMJ/IHI International Forum in Utrecht (May 21–23), Jan-Willem Weenink led a full-day interactive session with the Care Quality Commission (England), the Norwegian Board for Health Supervision, and the Dutch Health & Youth Care Inspectorate, exploring the history of regulation, how regulators can positively impact care, and approaches to complex topics like just culture. Participants concluded the day with a hands-on role-play exercise as regulators. In another session, Josje Kok co-hosted a workshop with international researchers and leaders, focusing on involving professionals, patients, and families in incident investigations — insights that will contribute to a comparative academic paper on justice after harm.
38th EPSO Conference in Jersey
At the 38th EPSO Conference in Jersey, Hester van de Bovenkamp presented on the role of patients and patient science in healthcare regulation, while Roland Bal led discussions on current regulatory challenges. Their contributions sparked dialogue on shifting expectations, the complexities of modern care systems, and the evolving roles of regulators.
Dutch Supervision Festival
The Expert Group also participated in the Dutch Supervision Festival, presenting findings from the RUN study on reflexive regulation. Milan van Keulen co-hosted a workshop with inspectors experimenting with reflexive approaches in dementia care networks, using role-play to shift perspectives from evaluative to facilitative regulation. In a separate session, Josje Kok highlighted how reflexive regulation’s participatory, learning-focused approach embodies responsive and impactful oversight.
Through these activities, the Expert Group continues to foster knowledge exchange, strengthen international networks, and promote innovation that enhances healthcare regulation and patient safety worldwide.
