Former master student Emilia Tanis of Erasmus School of Law was one of three nominees for the prestigious ASP Thesis Award 2025. The prize is intended to stimulate young legal talent who are committed to the position of victims of personal injury.
Thorough thesis on victims' rights
Her thesis, entitled "The legal remedies of the injured party in criminal proceedings", examines the impact of the new Code of Criminal Procedure on the position of victims within criminal proceedings. The jury praised Tanis' work for her thorough analysis and up-to-date approach to victims' rights in criminal law. Although she did not emerge as the winner, her thesis is considered particularly valuable. It offers starting points for further legal discussion and policy development around the role of victims in criminal proceedings.
Emilia’s interest in personal injury was sparked by the minor Dood en Letsel (Death and Injury), which prompted her to further specialise in this field. During her master’s degree, Emilia completed various relevant internships and gained valuable work experience in the field of personal injury law.
From academic research to practice in personal injury law
After successfully completing the master Aansprakelijkheid en Verzekering (Liability and Insurance) at Erasmus School of Law, Emilia started working for M advocatuur, a firm based in Rotterdam that mainly handles personal injury cases for victims.
