A line of coke at a party. For many people, it’s all part of the fun, but behind that line lies a world of crime. Criminologist Robby Roks, who is part of the FORT-PORT research project, is investigating the role of the Port of Rotterdam in the drug trade and how that affects the city. In the 12th episode of Oh Ja Joh?!, he explains why figures on drug busts and arrests don’t tell the full story.
The drug economy is not confined to the port. The consequences are also visible in Rotterdam's neighbourhoods. Young people are approached to transport drugs or carry out other odd jobs. Roks and his colleagues are trying to gain a clear picture of the situation. That is why they want to get closer to the people who become involved in the drug economy. By talking to them, they hope to better understand why someone takes this step and what circumstances play a role in it.
Why do young people get involved?
Young people who grow up in poverty are far more vulnerable to becoming involved in crime. Social media also plays a role: through Snapchat and Telegram, young people come into contact with criminals more easily. Nevertheless, according to Roks, it is too simplistic to pinpoint social media as the cause. 'Poverty and inequality of opportunity are the well-known risk factors for criminal involvement', he explains.
Theatre production DOPE
The insights from the research are now also reflected in the theatre production DOPE, in which Roks and his fellow researchers are closely involved. The production follows four storylines that show how the cocaine economy affects people’s daily lives. Robby Roks: 'Please come! It has turned out to be a wonderful production.' The production will be performed at various venues across the country until the end of 2026.
