Methodology THE

World University Rankings Scores are based on five performance indicators:

  • Teaching (30%)
  • Research (30%)
  • Citations (30%)
  • International outlook (7.5%)
  • Industry income (2.5%)

The Academic Reputation Survey is an important determinant of both the Teaching and Research score, accounting in total for 33% of the score. This survey, carried out in partnership with Elsevier is invitation-only. Experienced, published scholars take part to ensure a representative statistical sample of global scholarship, across countries and academic disciplines. Reputation, perceived prestige and peer judgement thus play an important role in the determination of the Overall score.

Institutional data (e.g. number of students, staff etc.) is directly collected from the universities. Variables on research output and citations are obtained from Elsevier’s Scopus database. Indicators are normalized to reflect between subject differences.
