The corona situation brings an unprecedented achievement in the digitization of education. Prof. René van Swaaningen, professor of Criminology at Erasmus School of Law, has never experienced such an unreal situation within his 34 years of experience.
Digitalisation makes conducting the Socratic conversation, beloved by Van Swaaningen, more difficult. Nevertheless, he is positive about it. He thinks the corona situation even helps students to explain various criminological terms. For example, he tells his listeners: “I no longer have to explain to you what the local influence of globalization is. Something that started in Wuhan ended up in the Netherlands via Italy. We are now pre-eminently noticing the local consequences of global developments. ”
Van Swaaningen emphasizes the importance of putting the situation into perspective. He acknowledges the seriousness of the situation, but also notes that the situation here can still be put into perspective, compared to the dramas that take place at the external borders of Europe and in the refugee camps in Greece.
Where other universities run into obstacles, Erasmus University Rotterdam has digitalization under good control and, according to the Media Support Center, this change is being carried out flawlessly. The fact that Erasmus University experiences so little resistance to this change is partly due to the good preparation for certain digitalisation in the future: after all, it was already planning to further digitalise education.
