New Voices Prize awarded for thought-provoking article on The death of laws

Alberto Quintavalla

Alberto Quintavalla, Assistant Professor at the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law of Erasmus School of Law, has recently received the prize for the best entry published in the European Journal of Legal Studies.

Quintavalla co-authored an article with Orlin Yalnazov entitled The Death of Laws: Environmental Protection and Mandatory Requirements. In this article, the authors argue that laws, even if left untouched by the political process, cause their own decay. This view complements the conventional view according to which legal change is seen as a process that is exogenous to law. The article was awarded the 2020/2021 New Voices Prize from the European Journal of Legal Studies.

In addition, the authors had the opportunity to present their work during an online event organised by the European University Institute for the launch of the new Journal issue. The prize was a pleasant surprise for both authors who were particularly happy to hear that their article has been positively received by the (unanimous vote of the) jury. In addition, they hope that the prize may draw more attention to this thought-provoking article and that other scholars may be more interested in engaging with it.
