Abstract

Guided by the key category of progress and thus highlighting the reception of Origen, the presentation will investigate Erasmus’ understanding of moral progress, exegetical progress, and the progress of the rational mind and soul in key texts of his production, with particular attention to the polemical and confessional context. Through the Encomium Moriae to the Liturgia Virginis Matris ad Lauretum, Erasmus' portrait of Christianity as a rational and universal cult, a secularized sobria temulentia, a religion of charity and freedom.

Biographical

Maria Fallica (PhD., Sapienza University of Rome) is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellow at Sapienza University of Rome, with the project FolieFolly and the feminine in the Renaissance, on how Erasmus and other key Renaissance figures. such as Marguerite of Navarre, Louise Labé, and others- used the mask of the fool as a tool to express and reveal truths, such as the scandalous announcement of the Gospel, and to allow women’s expression.  Her other research interests lie in the reception of the Fathers of the Church in the modern age, the Reformations of the 16th century, and the intellectual history of methodism. Her most recent publications are The Protestant Origen. Polemical Use and Theological Appropriation of Origen in 16th Century Patristic Anthologies, Aschendorff, Münster, 2022 and Il metodismo via media della Riforma. Progresso e tradizione nella Christian Library di Wesley, Carocci, Roma, 2022.
