The faculty colloquia aim to cover the broad scope of Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil), in analytic and continental philosophy as well as the history of philosophy. Speakers are free in their choice of the subject-matter of their talks, but are requested to present a talk accessible to all philosophers, students notably included.

About the speaker

Gary Shapiro is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Richmond (USA). He has published several books on Nietzsche including Nietzsche's Earth: Great Events, Great Politics(University of Chicago, 2016). Shapiro has also published numerous studies in the history of philosophy and the philosophy of art.

About the lecture: Nietzsche and the Politics of the Earth

Was Nietzsche a proto-fascist? Or should we read him apolitically as an individualistic existentialist? This talk outlines a fresh approach to Nietzsche's political thought, exploring his call for loyalty to the Earth, his critique of the state, and his analysis of temporality.
