As of 31 March 2018, the Erasmus Centre for Strategic Philanthropy (ECSP) will cease to exist. This decision has been taken by the Supervisory Board in consultation with ECSP’s core team. Despite the ECSP having received support from various funds since 2015 (in addition to the parties that established it), it has been jointly determined that the prospects of structural financial sustainability are poor.
Since its establishment in 2009, the Centre’s objective has been to contribute to the enhancement of the quality, effectiveness and impact of the philanthropic sector as a whole, as well as to the enhancement of endowed foundations. Executive Director Ann Gummels believes that the centre has made a substantial contribution to the development of knowledge within the sector. The ECSP has, for example, played a bridging role between academics and philanthropy practitioners. The Centre was also a platform enabling endowed foundations to enhance their knowledge. ‘I’m convinced that we have been able to offer the endowed foundations sector appropriate support and, in so doing, have enabled it to make a greater contribution to society,’ she said.
The Erasmus Centre for Strategic Philanthropy was established in 2009 thanks to a financial contribution from the Adessium Foundation, a privately funded public-interest organisation. Erasmus School of Economics and Rotterdam School of Management made their academic knowledge available for the benefit of research and ECSP’s other activities. In addition, the ECSP facilitated the financing of a number of doctoral courses.
