Every year the American Library Association publishes a list of books that were deemed the most 'controversial' during the past year. It specifically lists the top 10 books that libraries received the most complaints about, something that is done more and more by organized groups rather than individual concerned parents.
Like every year the Erasmus University Library has purchased the books on this list: these can now be loaned and read. View our online exposition to see which books were targeted, and find out why they received so many censorship requests.
In the current turbulent political climate within the United States, librarians and teachers that are vocal in their defense for the freedom to read continue to receive many threats. During Banned Books Week, which lasts from October 5th to October 11th this year, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and readers alike, celebrate the freedom to read. Emphasis lies on the value and necessity of this freedom, the freedom of expression, and the importance of having free access to knowledge and information.
The University Library welcomes acquisition suggestions, please fill in the form on our website.
