Generative AI is rapidly becoming part of the research landscape. From supporting writing and coding to exploring ideas, working with information and communicating research findings, tools such as ChatGPT, Desidera and Copilot are opening up new possibilities. But using them effectively also means understanding their limitations, risks and responsibilities.
To help EUR researchers navigate this changing landscape, the Erasmus University Library has developed a new online module on Generative AI in research. The free, online module takes just 60 to 90 minutes to complete and is aimed at PhD candidates, postdocs, faculty members and research support staff who want to develop their GenAI literacy and learn how to use these tools responsibly in their research.
From possibilities to responsible use
The online module provides a practical introduction to GenAI, with a particular focus on Large Language Models (LLMs). It explains what GenAI is, how LLMs work and which GenAI tools are available and appropriate to use at EUR.
It also introduces practical prompting skills and explores how GenAI can fit into different stages of the research process. Topics include writing and editing, finding literature, working with databases, coding and communicating research to a wider audience.
Just as importantly, the module addresses what researchers need to be careful about when using GenAI. It covers issues such as factual reliability, bias, copyright, skill erosion, censorship, consistency, sycophancy and fabricated references, as well as relevant journal and funding policies.
The aim is not to encourage researchers to use GenAI everywhere, but to help them make informed decisions about where these tools can add value - and where caution is needed.
A trusted guide for researchers
The online module has been created by Dr. Jesse Millek from the Erasmus University Library, in collaboration with the Engagement & Research Services (ERS) department, with a focus on the needs and context of EUR researchers.
This module takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete, is available online and is free for EUR researchers and research support staff.
