Focus on that which you can control, not on the things you can’t change. The lessons of the Stoic philosophers of old have surged in popularity in the last decade. From famous athletes to successful CEO’s, many swear by the writings of Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius. But why? How is it that such an old philosophy resonates in modern times? And: How can one become a Stoic themselves?
The lecture How To Be a Stoic dives into the current popularity of stoic philosophy. Dr. Michiel Buis will teach us about the origins of the philosophy, its modern resurgence, and how it can be applied to life in our current age. Is modern Stoicism different from the classical one? Why is it used in self-help books, coaching, even therapy? Has it always been this popular?
Dr. Michiel Buis received his PhD from Erasmus School of Philosophy on the contemporary application of ancient stoicism. He works as a researcher at Breda University of Applied Sciences, focusing on the ethical dimensions of sustainability, and is committed to building bridges between philosophical practice and theory.
