Impactful study: Children from poor families are disadvantaged early on

Bastian Ravesteijn

Children from poor families are falling behind early on, reports newspaper De Volkskrant based on new research from Erasmus School of Economics with data from 153,000 children.

As soon as after just four months, health differences can be seen between babies from poor families and babies from rich families. From the age of about two years, the gap becomes even wider. The impactful study, among others reported by the daily newspaper De Volkskrant on Friday 23 July 2021, was conducted by researchers Bastian Ravesteijn and Coen van de Kraats of Erasmus School of Economics. They looked at data on weight, language development and social and psychological problems, amongst other things. Those non-traceable data on children born between 1998 and 2017 come from child health centers and school doctors in four different regions.
