Lilianne Ploumen gastspreker bij Opening Academisch Jaar

Lilianne Ploumen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation and alumna of Erasmus University, is the guest speaker at the Opening of the Academic Year on Monday 29 august 2016. Both she and President of the Executive Board Kristel Baele will discuss meeting social challenges like digitalisation and sustainable growth.

Theme of this year’s opening is ‘Meeting tomorrow’s challenges’. The world around us is changing at top speed: faster than ever, or so it seems. Even since its inception, Erasmus University Rotterdam has been a university with a strong social orientation, driven to resolve today’s and tomorrow’s complex issues, using its knowledge and expertise. Not alone, but together with others. How do we meet the challenge of digitalisation? How do we relate globalisation with sustainable growth and welfare? And how can we create a truly inclusive society?

Lilianne Ploumen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation and alumna of Erasmus University, and President of the Executive Board Kristel Baele will discuss these matters during the Opening of the Academic Year. Ms Ploumen studied History of Society at Erasmus University Rotterdam. During the ceremony, the university awards will also be handed out.

A new feature at the opening is ‘Student in the spotlight’. One or more students get five minutes on stage in the auditorium to talk about their project or initiative. Inspiring stories, special things that students of the Erasmus University do to realize their ambitions. Finally, Rector Magnificus Prof. Huibert Pols will officially open the new academic year.
