Media scholar Ofra Klein from Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication has been nominated for the title of New Scientist Wetenschapstalent (Science Talent) 2025 of the Netherlands and Flanders, for her research on the far right and social media. Klein is the only scientist from Erasmus University Rotterdam among the 15 nominees. The public can cast their vote from Thursday 21 August until Monday 8 September.
Innovative research
Ofra Klein investigates how far-right groups use social media to organise and spread their ideas. Her research stands out because she does not only focus on ideology and rhetoric, but also on the role of platform design, algorithms, and moderation rules. For example, she has mapped how users employ so-called dog whistles – coded language – to evade online moderation.
Societal relevance
Klein's research makes a direct contribution to pressing societal issues. It demonstrates how extremist movements gain ground online and offers insights into how this can be countered. Her work underlines the importance of clear regulation and effective platform moderation in tackling online radicalisation.
