Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) celebrated its 112th anniversary during the Dies Natalis on November 10, 2025. During this ceremony, Professor Vincent Jaddoe was appointed as the fifth Erasmus Professor. This prestigious title is awarded by the EUR Executive Board to inspiring scientists who lead multidisciplinary teams and help to achieve the strategic goals of Erasmus University.

They are at the forefront of their profession and are pioneers in the field of social impact. Professor Jaddoe has been appointed Erasmus Professor for a period of five years.

From optimal start to a healthy life

Professor Vincent Jaddoe is a pediatrician and professor of pediatrics and epidemiology at Erasmus MC. He is also the lead researcher for Generation R, in which more than 20 departments from Erasmus MC and EUR work closely together to improve the health, well-being, and social participation of future generations.

The Generation R study involves detailed research into more than 15,000 children and their parents, from the earliest stages of life to adulthood. Jaddoe applies innovative and transdisciplinary strategies in this large-scale population study. And converts these into new preventive strategies aimed at future parents and young children.

Bringing together researchers from more than twenty different disciplines generates new insights. This makes it possible to detect and address health problems earlier, contributing to a healthier society.

Co-creation, impact-driven research, and breakthroughs

Vincent Jaddoe is also the initiator and one of the Academic Leads of the Healthy Start Convergence Program, in which Erasmus MC, EUR, and TU Delft work closely together. This program uses co-creation and new transdisciplinary collaborations to conduct impact-driven research into complex social challenges for parents, children, and young people.

Jaddoe is also an adjunct professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston and a member of the KNAW and the Academy of Europe. He has received several prestigious grants, including a European Research Council Grant for his research into the Embryonic Origins of Cardiovascular Disease throughout lifespan.

With this appointment, Jaddoe will expand his impact-driven research program through new collaborations, infrastructures, and educational programs. He strongly believes that this approach is necessary to achieve the breakthroughs needed to keep health, prevention, and care accessible and affordable for new generations.

Role of the Erasmus Professors
