Robin L. Lumsdaine appointed professor at Erasmus School of Economics

The appointment of Robin Lumsdaine is a nice culmination of a collaboration that began when she first gave a research seminar at Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1997.  Since then, she has returned to Erasmus University nearly every year; she also has hosted eleven Erasmus students as research interns during this time.   In addition to two publications as a result of these internships (one in Demography and another in the European Economic Review) and a number of additional working papers, she recently published a paper in Economic Journal with Professor Dick van Dijk and Dr Michel van der Wel.  In 2015 as a visiting professor, Lumsdaine, who is active in research related to aging and health, introduced twelve bachelor students to the SHARE (Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe) dataset, one of the leading data sets for studying aging and health issues in Europe.  Lumsdaine then accompanied five of these students as they presented their research in the fifth edition of the SHARE (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) User Conference in Luxembourg.  A sixth student received the 2015 Netspar BSc thesis award.

In addition to her research on aging and health, Lumsdaine conducts research related to international finance, banking, and the global financial crisis. She was recently awarded a fellowship by the US Treasury and in the fall will begin working with their Office of Financial Research to develop metrics for assessing complexity to assist in their systemically important financial institution determination, building on work she presented in 2015 at an Econometric Institute seminar. 

Robin Lumsdaine, who obtained her PhD at Harvard University, is a Professor at American University’s Kogod School of Business where she holds the Crown Prince of Bahrain Chair in International Finance. Previously she was an Associate Director in the Division of Banking Supervision and Regulation and Head of the Quantitative Risk Management Group at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Before joining the Board, Professor Lumsdaine was Director in the Global Markets Research division of Deutsche Bank. She also held positions as Professor of Economics at Brown University, Senior Economist at the President's Council of Economic Advisers under President Bill Clinton, and Assistant Professor at Princeton University.  She is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, Senior Fellow of the Society for Financial Econometrics, International Finance Fellow at the Center for Financial Stability, and a Netspar Fellow.
