Spinger Nature 2026 Open Access deal reaches cap

The 2026 Open Access Deal with Springer Nature has now reached its limit. The University Library can no longer financially support Open Access costs for articles published in Springer Nature journals.

The Springer Nature Open Access agreement for the Netherlands has now reached its limit, meaning that authors will no longer be able to publish their articles open access under this agreement for the remainder of the year.

As a result, manuscripts accepted between October 14 2026 and 1 January 2027 will no longer be eligible for Open Access publication funding through the agreement. Authors may still choose to publish their articles Open Access; however, the associated Article Processing Charge (APC) will need to be covered by the author or another research funding source.

If the APC cannot be paid, articles published in a Spinger Nature hybrid journal can still be made Open Access through our Open Access Regulation. Under this regulation, a copy of the article will be made openly available in the Institutional Repository six months after publication. Through this route, Erasmus University achieves Open Access for more than 99% of its short scientific publications.
