On Friday 23 January 2026, the Erasmus Centre for Energy Transition (ECET), together with Erasmus School of Economics, presented the new ESB dossier ”Nieuwe Energie” at an inspiring symposium on the economic perspectives of the energy transition. The event brought together a wide range of researchers, policymakers and professionals from private and public sector.

The symposium opened with remarks from Malou Kroezen (ECET) and Ronald Huisman, Professor of Sustainable Energy Finance at (Erasmus School of Economics). They elaborated on why the energy transition is a vital area of focus for economists. Kroezen noted that the transition is not solely a technological challenge, while Huisman stated that, although economists may not have all the answers, they can make an important contribution.

The programme continued with a keynote address by Hans Stegeman, Chief Economist at Triodos Bank. He emphasised that supporting projects is not only about financing, but also about shaping public opinion. He argued that the financial sector should invest in renewables, cut emissions and support nature.

Successively, Professor Ronald Huisman delivered his inaugural lecture in the presence of among others colleagues, family and friends.
