At Erasmus University Rotterdam, we aim to enhance student wellbeing through an integrated approach that supports students in their academic and personal development. The Student Wellbeing Programme supports this ambition by providing resources, guidance and opportunities for growth, resilience and self-discovery.
Student wellbeing is shaped by multiple factors, so it requires a coordinated approach across the university. Our integrated approach provides a structured framework for embedding student wellbeing across all levels of the university. It brings together expertise, responsibilities, and actions to create a supportive environment in which students can develop and access the support they need throughout their student journey.
Our approach
Addressing student wellbeing requires more than individual services or isolated initiatives. A coordinated and systemic approach is needed to respond to the diverse and changing needs of students.
By connecting individual support with collective responsibility, organisational embedding, and policy development our approach enables a consistent focus on student wellbeing across the university. It is practice-driven and evidence-informed, allowing us to continuously learn, improve and respond to student needs.
How our approach works
We translate our integrated approach into practice through a set of strategic impact areas. Each impact area represents a different level at which we can strengthen student wellbeing — from supporting individual students and building a supportive community, to embedding wellbeing in university structures, policies and partnerships.
Together, the impact areas form the framework that guides our initiatives, services collaborations and continuous development. In this way, we ensure that student support services, wellbeing activities, policy development, training for staff, monitoring, and research reinforce each other rather than being developed in isolation from one another.
Strategic impact areas
- Personal wellbeing
Supporting students in developing the skills, knowledge, and personal resources to strengthen their physical, mental, and social wellbeing.
- Collective wellbeing
Fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture in which students and staff can develop and thrive, based on shared responsibility for wellbeing.
- Organisational embedding
Embedding student wellbeing in the university’s systems, spaces, and everyday practices across the university.
- Policy & strategy
Embedding student wellbeing in institutional policy, governance, and long-term strategy.
- External partnerships & collaboration
Strengthening collaboration with external partners to develop joint initiatives, exchange knowledge, and create societal impact.
Enabling layers
The strategic impact areas are supported by two enabling layers that run across all areas. They help ensure that our work is connected, evidence-informed and visible throughout the university.
- Monitoring & research
Our services, activities, and policies are continuously informed and improved through monitoring, research and evidence-based practice.
- Communication
We increase awareness, visibility, and accessibility of student wellbeing across and beyond the university.
Our shared commitment
The integrated approach is supported by the EUR Student Wellbeing Manifesto, signed by the Rector Magnificus and the Vice Dean of Education of all faculties, expressing a university-wide commitment to strengthening student wellbeing across Erasmus University Rotterdam.
