Since early 2026, students, staff and visitors to Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) are able to enjoy a unique work of art in both stairwells of the Langeveld Building. The mural is entitled “Twisting Thriving Topographies” and was created by Brussels-based artist Hadassah Emmerich.

Unique character
The work consists of colourful organic shapes, applied using a special ink printing technique in collaboration with Murals.Inc.
The title “Twisting Thriving Topographies” refers to the rhythmic and organic movement in the murals, in which lines and motifs intertwine, twist up and down and flow through the space. Each floor and stairwell forms, as it were, an island or energy field with its own character. The colourful patterns and motifs on the cool concrete seem to move with you up the stairs - a unique experience.
'Twisting' refers to the dynamics and circulation of forms, “Thriving” to growth, vitality and the lively character of the compositions. “Topographies” emphasises the spatial structure, as if it were a landscape that can be explored both visually and conceptually.
Rhythm and colour
The work combines historical and cultural references, such as Art Deco and Indonesian batik, and invites an experience that is both monumental and intimate, carrying the viewer along with its rhythm and colour.
Art on campus
In order to provide its approximately 35,000 students, staff and visitors with a pleasant learning and working environment that stimulates and inspires, EUR is implementing the “Campus in Development” investment programme. This consists of the construction and renovation of buildings on campus, as well as the creation of art in those buildings. The mural by Hadassah Emmerich has been realised.
