Maurice Jansen, senior researcher and business developer at Erasmus UPT shares his vision on sustainability within the maritime sector at the Navingo Career Event.

Maurice is one of the speakers at the talk show "Reality of sustainability" at the career event on May 23. Sustainability and talent is a spearhead for him. "There are various issues that play a major role in sustainability today. Such as how ports and port cities can develop sustainably and take their responsibility," says Maurice.

Young talent and sustainability

One of the pillars for more sustainability is the deployment of young talent. “In conversations with students and young professionals, I find it striking that they have a strong motivation to work towards making the maritime sector more sustainable. This motivation corresponds with the desire to make Rotterdam the maritime green capital of Europe.”

Applying other values

According to Maurice, it is important for sustainability in the sector that companies look for their own motivation and values. “Of course, companies are mainly concerned with maintaining the company and making a profit. But there are also other values, such as zero waste.

Talent as driver for change

Fortunately, we see companies increasingly focusing on sustainable goals. Young talent is often a driver for this. That is why it is important that Rotterdam attracts and binds young talent."

Connecting with talent

“Another route to more sustainability is to connect training and knowledge. There is a large community of education and programme institutes in and around Rotterdam. But if you ask foreign students which programmes they know, then the answer is maybe one or two. And that is a shame, because we miss out on so many talents.

Matching talent

With Rotterdam: Maritime Capital of Europe, we want to match young talent through a joint proposition from the education programmes. In this way, students know more quickly which study program suits them and thus find a better connection in the sector.”

Rotterdam maritime capital

“Together we must have the mindset that Rotterdam is the place to be when it comes to maritime services, just as London is the financial capital of Europe. We can achieve that goal by promoting the attractiveness of Rotterdam for students and for companies, start-up incubators and maritime entrepreneurs.”
