Biography

Maryam is a researcher working at the intersection of economics and urban studies. Her current focus is on spatial planning challenges as well as economic vitality. She also has experience in urban mobility issues, with past research exploring EV charging infrastructure, forced car ownership, and travel time use. She considers herself an all-round researcher, using both quantitative and qualitative methods, and especially enjoys academic writing and building dashboards that translate complex research into actionable insights.

  • Location Characteristics of Circular Businesses

    This study analyzes the location requirements of companies operating in the circular economy. Circular activities are categorized into reducing raw material consumption, replacing materials with biobased alternatives, extending product lifespans, and high-value material processing. The study compares the characteristics of thousands of current business locations with the location preferences indicated by companies through a survey. It provides policy recommendations for spatial and economic strategies to promote circularity.

  • YIMBY: Strategies for Creating Space for Transition Challenges

    South Holland faces significant spatial challenges related to the energy transition, circularity, and climate adaptation. Certain facilities essential for these transitions frequently encounter local opposition. This research identifies the most suitable strategies for approximately 2,400 neighbourhoods of Zuid-Holland which transform NIMBY (not in my backyard) attitudes to YIMBY (yes, in my backyard) support.

  • Stargate

    The mission of Stargate is to develop, test and deploy a set of innovative solutions making aviation and airports significantly greener and more sustainable. The consortium consists of 22 European partners including airports, airlines, mobility & knowledge institutes and local authorities.

  • Economic Vitality of Rotterdam’s Business Terrains

    This dashboard analyses the economic performance of Rotterdam's business districts to support spatial planning decisions amid growing scarcity of business space. It provides insights into the character of Rotterdam’s business districts, their specializations and local advantages, and where development stems from. The tool helps the municipality identify which sectors and areas perform best.

  • Electric vehicle charging in Europe

    The aim of the project is to provide an overview of the state of art of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Europe, and to discuss the potential role of the parking sector. To this end, we use desk research, semi-structured interviews, and survey data.

  • Space Requirements for Essential Industries

    This study analyzes, based on literature and data, which sectors are essential and what their spatial footprint is on water-bound industrial sites with a high environmental category in the Rotterdam – The Hague metropolitan region. Several of these sites will be transformed into housing and other uses in the coming years. The report highlights the resulting demand for expansion and replacement, the policy dilemmas that arise, and the most promising solutions.
