Introduction

The Department of Media and Communication has temporary vacancies for lecturers (WD4/ 0.6-0.9 fte)  in Media and Communication. 

 

Job description

The lecturers we are looking for will have to perform teaching and supervising tasks for the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM) and/or the Master’s programmes in Media and Communication. All lecturers will be expected to supervise pre-master’s, BA and/or MA thesis projects. 

Given the specific teaching needs in our department, we are particularly looking for:

  • A lecturer (WD4) with a teaching focus on introductory courses in media studies, digital media industries and organizational communication.  

Job requirements

  • A Master’s degree (a research master is considered an advantage) or approved PhD dissertation, in the social sciences or humanities, preferably in the field of media studies and/or communication sciences;

  • A broad knowledge of key theories and mastery of a wide range of common quantitative and qualitative social-scientific research methods in the field of media and communication;

  • At least three years prior teaching experience and the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to  postgraduate levels, apparent from positive assessments by students and peers;

  • Having obtained the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BTQ) or an equal qualification is considered an advantage;
  • The ability and willingness to teach a wide range of topics in the field of media and communication,  with a focus on research methods and to contribute to course development;
  • Experience with media and communication research;
  • Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers have to meet the 
    C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF);
  • Non-Dutch speaking applicants are expected to acquire the Dutch language;
  • Strong team-playing, organizational and communication skills;
  • Experience in international academic settings.

Employment conditions and benefits

We offer you an internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with excellent working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU).

Employment starts on August 15th, 2026. The position concerns a temporary contract which will be running for one-year until August 14th, 2027. After this period, an extension is possible.

The conditions of employment correspond with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is subject to training and experience and corresponds to Scale 10 NU, with a minimum of € 3.546 (scale 10, grade 0) and a maximum of €5.538 (scale 10, grade 12) gross per month on a 38 hour per week contract. 

The EUR has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8.0%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 41 annual vacation days in case of a full workweek.

The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) is part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The school has three departments: HistoryArts and Culture and Media & Communication. There are approximately 2500 students and 220 employees.

 

 

 

Department

The Media and Communication Department is a dynamic, internationally oriented department within the ESHCC. The department offers five international degree programmes: the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM), and international Master’s programmes in Media Studies (Media & Business, Media & Creative Industries, Media, Digitalisation & Society) and the Research master in the Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts. In addition, the department offers the Dutch-language MA Media Studies programme Media & Journalistiek. The department has close ties with Derius – Erasmus Research Institute for Media, Culture and History, the primary research institute at EUR in the field of Media, Communication and Culture.
