In conversation with Rotterdam residents

Warda Belabas (ESSB) chatting to a citizen from the neighbourhood Beverwaard.

With the "Vital Cities and Citizens" initiative, EUR scientists are conducting research into current challenges in Rotterdam: how can municipalities create space for diversity and give residents the feeling that everyone belongs? For example, Warda Belabas (ESSB) is conducting research into the Rotterdam district of Beverwaard, a neighbourhood that struggles with a bad image due to its struggle with crime. 'We know that there are quite a few problems in this neighbourhood surrounding poverty, safety, language skills and distrust of authorities', says Belabas. 'That is why we are not just looking at the neighbourhood from our tower, but we are actually talking to the residents. Together we think about what we can do here.'

Helping at the Rotterdam Food Bank

Every year in December, EUR employees can choose to donate their end-of-year gift. In 2023, 102 employees did this, allowing the Rotterdam Food Bank to put together 800 food parcels with the help of ten EUR employees. Even though the food bank only needed ten employees to help, over a hundred colleagues had signed up to volunteer. One of the employees who was there, Eloise Swets, says: 'I thought it was a valuable morning that once again confronted you with the facts. It's good to get away from your desk and to be able to do something for others.'
