Introduction

We are urgently looking for an addition to the academic staff of the Commercial Law section to assist us with the commercial and transport law courses in the Bachelor and Commercial Law Master programmes.

Job description

Your duties will in any case include:

  • performing educational duties, such as developing teaching materials, lecturing and drafting and grading exams in commercial law, transport law and maritime law;
  • coordinating education and acting as a contact person and/or coordinating other activities of the department;
  • coaching moot court teams;
  • and supervising and assessing students in their (bachelor's and master's) thesis work.

Your specific duties will be discussed and agreed with you.

Job requirements

You have a Master in Private Law (or similar) and you have successfully defended a PhD on a commercial law subject. We also expect you to be interested in and prepared to specialize in transport and maritime law.  Pre-existing knowledge of or experience with these areas of law is a plus. Experience as a lawyer, claims handler, etc. in commercial practice is also a plus.

You are an excellent lecturer and have excellent didactic and peoples' skills. You are proficient in English and Dutch and are able to teach in both languages. You have the study results and/or publications to demonstrate your writing skills. You have a cooperative and communicative personality that combines a focus on results with collegiality.

The start date of this position is December 1st 2025 and you will be based at Erasmus School of Law (ESL). This position is for 0.8 fte - 1 fte. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and ranges from a minimum of € 4.728 to a maximum of € 6.433 gross per month Scale 11 on a fulltime basis (38 hours), in accordance with the CAO-NU. The contract is offered for a period of 18 months and can be converted into an employment contract for an indefinite period if suitability is proven and if continued in the same position, if (financial and/or organizational) circumstances remain the same.

Erasmus School of Law employs 500 members of staff and is attended by around 6000 students. Erasmus School of Law offer bachelor programmes in Law, Tax Law and Criminology, with a focus on active academic learning. The Bachelor's phase is characterised by problem-based learning (PBL).  Students can subsequently choose from a wide variety of master programmes. Erasmus School of Law also collaborates in Double Degree programmes combining law and (business) economics or law and business administration and is one of the founders of the European Master in Law & Economics. Once students have completed their master’s degree, they may choose from several postgraduate tracks provided by Erasmus School of Law (in collaboration with Erasmus Academy and others).

Department

The Commercial Law section, which is part of the Law & Markets Department, consists of a small team of specialised lawyers with a strong focus on transport and maritime law. These areas of law, as well as commercial law in general, are characterised by their strong connection to practice and their international dimension, which is also reflected in our teaching and research.
