Introduction

As our research software engineer, you join the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) in the Research Software Engineering & Consulting (RSEC) team. You directly work with three other colleagues and form part of the Digitalisation & Information Services (RDIS) team at RSM, one of Europe’s most international and innovative business schools.

Job description

Your role as RSE is vital in supporting the diverse and innovative research conducted by RSM’s academic staff. You’re part of our Digitalisation and Information Services (RDIS) team, which consists of software engineers, consultants, application managers, and more.

Through robust software solutions, you closely collaborate with academics to enhance the quality and efficiency of their research. You'll participate in our regularly organised walk-in sessions to assist academics with their research and data collection.

The day starts with a stand-up meeting, so that you and your RSE colleagues can discuss which research projects you're working on, whether there is any new information, and if you can help each other clear any hurdles.

The work is diverse; you'll be asked to think along with the researchers and to be flexible in the programming languages implementations. Mostly, we work in Python, but we aim to use the language best suited to the problem. Other programming languages we currently work with include:

  • R
  • JavaScript
  • PHPC#
  • Unity (VR development)

Note: you don’t need to be an expert in these other languages, but need to be open and interested to look beyond your standard vocabulary/programming language.

In addition you are:

  • Analytical
  • Communicative
  • Have an affinity with an educational work environment.

You will get asked all sorts of questions, meaning that except for programming, you're also co-creating research questions and if you're interested, teaching a basic python programming course.

Job requirements

  • HBO+ education, preferably related to programming, informatics, or computer science
  • Fluent in English (CEFR C1)
  • Fluent in Dutch (CEFR C1)
  • Verifiable experience in Python (+3 years)
  • Verifiable experience in any of these programming languages: R, PHP, JavaScript, C#, Go, Java, Rust, Ruby, other web based programming language (+3 years)

Preferences

  • Previous work experience in an educational and/or research landscape
  • Consulting experience
  • Educational experience
  • Linux experience
  • University Teaching Qualification (BKO)
  • Knowledge of web technology
