Lise Zurné (1992) is a PhD candidate at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication.  She graduated her BSc in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology (VU Amsterdam) and MA in Visual Anthropology (Leiden University) cum laude. For her masterthesis, she explored the popular phenomenon of historical re-enactment in Indonesia, which also resulted in a documentary: The Feel of History (2017, 29m). This film follows a historical society that re- enacts one of the last battles with the Dutch colonizers of 1949 in Yogyakarta. It shows how these re-enactors create their own spectacular and romanticized re-presentation of the past and has screened at various ethnographic film festivals. Her written thesis analyzed the re-enactment in relation to the history and political landscape of Indonesia.

Her current research further explores the topic of historical re-enactment as part of the project: War ! Popular Culture and European Heritage of Major Armed Conflicts. Lise is supervised by Maria Grever, Stijn Reijnders and Robbert-Jan Adriaansen.
